WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman guard Dee Goens (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored a career-high 13 points, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Lehigh 78-60 at the Hart Center. Goens made three of five field goal attempts on the day, in addition to sinking all seven of his shots from the foul line. Holy Cross falls to 5-17 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Lehigh improves to 14-8 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.
The Crusaders started the game by jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead after the first three minutes of play. The Mountain Hawks scored the next seven points to take the lead, and the score stayed close for the next several minutes. With 3:30 left in the half, junior guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) sank a three-pointer to tie the score at 25-25. But Lehigh then closed out the half with a 9-1 run to take a 34-26 advantage into the locker room.
The Mountain Hawks held onto the lead early in the second half, and were up 47-37 with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Lehigh then went on an 8-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to put the game away. Holy Cross would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way, as the Mountain Hawks eventually claimed an 18-point victory.
Junior forward Andrew Keister (Galloway, N.J.) posted a double-double for the Crusaders with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.), Holy Cross’ leading scorer, missed the game due to injury.
Lehigh was led by Gabe Knutson with 31 points and five rebounds, while C.J. McCollum added 17 points.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when they play host to Lafayette at 3:30 p.m.
