LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Nevada-Las Vegas guard Tre’Von Willis totaled 14 points, six rebounds and three assists, to lead the Runnin’ Rebels to an 80-59 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Crusaders were led by sophomore guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Holy Cross falls to 0-5 overall on the season, while UNLV improves to 4-0.
The Rebels held a 9-8 lead after the first six minutes of the opening half, before scoring seven straight points to go in front 16-8. A few minutes later, a 6-0 spurt allowed UNLV to increase its lead to double figures for the first time in the game (27-14). The Crusaders then scored the next six points to make the score 27-20, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the night. The Rebels eventually took a 40-28 advantage into the locker room.
Holy Cross was still down by 12 (45-33) with 17 minutes left to play in the game, when UNLV went on 8-0 run to increase its lead to 20 points. The Rebels then led by at least 15 points the rest of the way, before eventually claiming a 21-point victory (80-59).
Sophomore guard Mike Cavataio (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finished the game with nine points and 13 rebounds, while junior guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) added eight points. Freshman guard Dee Goens (Alpharetta, Ga.) also played well for the Crusaders, totaling seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
Holy Cross did hold a 40-36 rebounding advantage on the night, but committed a season-high 24 turnovers.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Western Michigan for a 2:00 p.m. game.
