Holy Cross Baseball Names Captains

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross baseball team has named senior catcher Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) and senior pitcher Tim Thran (Fall River, Mass.) as co-captains of the 2008 Crusaders.

Akashian, who just earned co-team MVP and All-Patriot League first team honors had a strong junior season for the Crusaders as he led the team in hitting with a .330 batting average, while he led the Patriot League in on base percentage (.520) and was second in the league in slugging percentage (.566). He was also tied for the team lead in RBI (29), home runs (5) and triples (2), while he was second in runs scored. Akashian set a school single-season record and leads the nation for being hit by a pitch with 23. Earlier in the season he was named the Patriot League Player of the Week.

Thran is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and received the 2005 Ron Soucie Award given to the team's Rookie of the Year. In the 2006 season, Thran ranked fourth on the team in earned runs average and had a 1-1 record with one save. This season he made eight appearances with six strikeouts.
