Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross baseball team was picked to finish third in the 2005 Patriot League preseason poll as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors from around the league. The Crusaders earned 28 total points, finishing behind second-place Lehigh, which totaled 36 points and two first place votes. Army received 10 first place votes and was picked to finish first this season after earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament last year.
Returning for Holy Cross this year are All-League selection Tucker Frawley (New Haven, Conn.) and 2003 All-League pick Mike Marron (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.). Frawley, a junior second baseman, paced the Crusaders with 24 runs and 20 RBI, while batting .328 last season. In Patriot League competition Frawley was among the League's leaders in walks (11) and runs scored (16). Marron, a senior catcher and co-captain this season, provides experience and consistency for first year head coach Craig Najarian. Marron will be a threat both offensively and defensively, as he batted a team-high .346 last season, while not committing a single error.
Another offensive threat for the Crusaders is senior third baseman Mike Schell (Newtown, Pa.) who started 34 games last year and batted .277, including 35 hits and two home runs. Schell's 20 runs batted in tied Frawley for team-high honors.
The Crusaders finished fourth last year with a 14-22-1 overall record and a 9-11 conference mark. They open up the season March 6-12 in Bradenton, Fla. HC's first home game is a 3:00 start against Assumption on March 17.
