ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A four-run rally in the top of the fifth inning led the No. 3 Holy Cross baseball team to pick up a 6-0 victory in the first game of today's Patriot League tournament semifinals doubleheader against second-seeded Navy.
Seniors outfielder Gil Gomez (Lake Worth, Fla.) led the Crusader offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate including two RBIs. Senior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) also had an impressive day as he recorded two RBIs for Holy Cross. Sophomore Bobby Holmes (Dedham, Mass.) earned the win for the Crusaders, scattering three hits over six innings while striking out three and walking one batter. Sophomore Ryan George (Seekonk, Mass.) picked up the save as he pitched three innings, giving up two hits while fanning four and walking two.
If the Crusaders win this afternoon's second game of the doubleheader, they will play the winner of the Bucknell/Army series in the league championship. Bucknell currently leads the series with a 5-4 win in 10 innings today.
