EASTON, Pa. - Junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.) went 3-for-8 with three RBI, while senior Andrew Tenaglia (Duxbury, Mass.) went 3-for-7 with one RBI, but it not enough as the Holy Cross baseball team dropped a doubleheader with Lafayette, losing by scores of 7-3 and 7-6 (11 innings), this afternoon in Patriot League action. The Crusaders fall to 12-22 overall (8-10 Patriot League), while the Leopards improve to 28-14 overall (17-3 Patriot League). Lafayette won the four-game series, 3-1.
Junior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) also had a solid day as he went 3-for-7 with two RBI, while sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.) went 4-for-9. Sophomore Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.) also had a strong day going 3-for-8 with two RBI.
With Army's four-game sweep of Lehigh, the Black Knights join Lafayette and Navy in next month's three-team Patriot League Tournament in Easton, Pa. The two games that the Crusaders had rained out at Army will be made up this week as a doubleheader in West Point, N.Y., as Army (11-7) is percentage points ahead of third place Navy (12-8) for the second spot in the tournament. Lafayette clinched the top spot this weekend. The date of the doubleheader will be determined on Monday.
In the first game, the Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first. Lister hit a two-run single to right field with the bases loaded and Hughes brought in the third run with a single to right field. The Leopards would then score three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth for the 7-3 final score. Kevin Reese earned the complete game win to improve to 6-1 on the season, as he pitched seven innings allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out five batters.
After Lafayette took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Crusaders made it a 2-1 game in the top of the second when Tenaglia hit a RBI single with two outs. The Leopards then increased their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Holy Cross made it a 4-3 game when Lister drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field and Hughes hit a RBI single to left field. After the Leopards made it a 5-3 game with one run in the bottom of the seventh, Holy Cross tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth when Akashian hit a two-run home run with one out to right field. The home run is Akashian's fifth of the season which is tied for the team lead. The Crusaders held the Leopards scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.) led off the top of the 11th with a solo home run to left field for his third home run of the season giving Holy Cross a 6-5 lead. With two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the 11th, Lafayette's Chris Luick put down a squeeze bunt to score the run. After Luick stole second, the next batter was intentionally walked. The next two batters then each forced walks as Lafayette won 7-6.
