April 24, 2006
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Holy Cross baseball team snapped a two-game skid with a 3-2 victory over Bucknell in the first game of doubleheader action on Monday afternoon in Lewisburg. The Bison battled back to take the second game, 7-6, and clinch the season series after defeating the Crusaders (15-22-1, 4-11 Patriot League), three games to one. Bucknell improves to 20-20 overall on the year, 10-6 in the Patriot League.
In the first game, Holy Cross broke a scoreless deadlock with two runs in the fourth inning. Tucker Frawley singled to right and came home on a two-out double to right center by Brian Abraham. Abraham later scored on a wild pitch for the team's second run.
After 4.2 innings, Buursma tallied the first hit of the contest for the Bison to break up Patrick Rutherford's no-hitter. Then in the sixth, Bucknell tied the score when Matt Capece singled to plate Duvall who was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI single by Walter.
Rutherford went the distance for the Crusaders and gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout to earn the win (1-0).
In game two, Kyle Walter put the Bison on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to right. Holy Cross cut the deficit in half in the third when Jake Gorman was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Tucker Frawley.
But Bucknell extended its lead to three (4-1) in the bottom of the inning after Walter doubled down the left field line and crossed the plate on a double by junior Ryan Gryskevicz. Gryskevicz would later score on a one-out double by Austin Turban.
In the top of the fourth, the Crusaders took their first lead of the game with a four-run inning. Brian Abraham began the rally with a one-out single to right, Kyle Lister reached on an error, Gorman singled through the left side and Tom Potvin reached on an error, plating Abraham. Jamie Aldrich was hit by a pitch to force in the second run of the inning and Frawley drove in Gorman and Potvin, giving Holy Cross a 5-4 advantage.
Bucknell fought back to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning when Walter sent a two-run single to left. Gryskevicz then plated Matt Capece with an RBI groundout for Bucknell's seventh run.
Holy Cross threatened in the ninth when Norm Roth led off the inning with a single into left field and Frawley was hit by a pitch, putting the tying runs on base for the Crusaders with no outs. Tyler Stampone sacrificed the runners over to second and third and Steve Soldi grounded out to score Roth, trimming Bucknell's lead to one.
But Bison sophomore Jason Buursma ended the game by getting Abraham to hit a fly ball to center. Buursma retired the final three batters of the game to record the save.
Holy Cross hosts Lafayette on April 29-30, in its final Patriot League series of the season.
