WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) went 2-for-3 including two home runs to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to a 17-12 win over Brown on Thursday afternoon at Fitton Field. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 18-22 on the season while the Bears fall to 18-17. Sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored and two RBI while sophomore Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Holy Cross scored in the bottom of the first as McCrea hit a leadoff double and then scored on a one-out home run to right center field by Gorman. In the bottom of the second inning, junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) hit a leadoff single to right field and then advanced to second on a steal. A one-out double by sophomore Jack Laurendeau (Sudbury, Mass.) scored Sills, giving the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Holy Cross rallied in eight more runs in the bottom of the third inning, led by sophomore Eddie Bleiler (Sudbury, Mass.), McCrea and sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) who each hit a two-RBI single.
Brown put three runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Crusaders rallied in four more runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 15-3 lead. The Bears put up one run in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the eighth, but Holy Cross put up two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as junior Mike Galvin (Newport, R.I.) hit a one-out home run to left field, making the score, 17-5. The Bears rallied in seven runs in the top of the ninth inning but came up short as the Crusaders picked up a 17-12 win.
Junior Ryan George (Seekonk, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season, pitching one inning and giving up one hit. Brown's Matt Boylan received the loss, giving up three runs on five hits in two innings pitched.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 25, hosting Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
