PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) went 3-for-8 including a two-run home run and a double while freshman Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Holy Cross baseball team split with Brown in a non-conference doubleheader, dropping the first game 5-3 and winning game two, 14-12. The Crusaders are now 19-22 while Brown is 15-24 on the season.
In the second game, Holy Cross grabbed a 3-0 lead led by Gorman who hit a two-run homer to left field in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third inning, the Bears' offense exploded, scoring 10 runs. Brown scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, The Crusaders chipped away at the lead and the Holy Cross relievers silenced Brown's bats for the final three innings. With two outs, Holy Cross rallied in four more runs in the top of the seventh as sophomore Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a two-run home run to left field, tying the game 12-12. Freshman Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) homered to left field, driving in two runs, lifting Holy Cross to a 14-12 victory.
Senior Gil Gomez (Lake Worth, Fla.) picked up his second victory of the season, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out one batter.
In game one, Oxford put the Crusaders ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning, hitting a two-out bases-loaded double to left field. The Bears held Holy Cross scoreless for the remainder of the game and were able to put five runs in the final three innings, making the score 5-3.
The Crusaders return to action this weekend, April 26-27, as they travel to Navy for two Patriot League doubleheaders. The first game will start at noon each day.
