WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Matt Perron (Auburn, Mass.) hit his first two collegiate home runs as the Holy Cross baseball team swept a doubleheader with Bucknell this afternoon on Senior Day in Patriot League action at Fitton Field, winning by scores of 5-0 and 15-1. With the wins, the Crusaders improve to 10-18 overall (7-7 Patriot League), while the Bison fall to 14-22 overall (6-10 Patriot League). Holy Cross took the series 3-1.
In the first game, the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when they scored two runs on an error. Holy Cross then increased its lead to 4-0 in the third inning when junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.) drove in two runs with a double down the right field line driving in senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.) and sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.). The Crusaders added one run in the sixth to make it a 5-0 game, when sophomore Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) singled though the left side with two outs bringing in sophomore Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.) who had doubled to lead off the inning. Freshman Bobby Holmes (Dedham, Mass.) was outstanding as he earned his first collegiate win pitching six shutout innings on five hits while striking out four.
In the second game, Holy Cross had a big fourth inning scoring eight runs to take an 8-0 lead. Lister drove in the first with a RBI double to left center, while Hughes drove in the next run with a single to center field. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gorman walked and Roth was hit by a pitch making it a 4-0 game. Junior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) then doubled to right field driving in three runs, while Stampone drove Akashian in with a double down the left field line for the last run of the inning.
After the Bison scored one run in the top of the fifth, Holy Cross responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run homer to left field by Perron for his first collegiate homer. In the bottom of the sixth, Perron hit a two-run homer to left field for his second of the game. Freshman Ryan George (Seekonk, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate win as he pitched five innings allowing only one run on five hits while striking out two batters.
For the day, Hughes went 4-for-8 with one RBI, while Perron went 3-for-6 with five RBI.
Before the game seniors Jamie Aldrich (Stratford, Conn.), Kevin Beglane (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Matt Blake (Concord, N.H.), Scott Hampe (Dedham, Mass.), Mike Miller (Wayzata, Minn.), Rob Oteri (Sudbury, Mass.), Matt Perron (Auburn, Mass.), Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.), Patrick Rutherford (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Andrew Tenaglia (Duxbury, Mass.) were honored for their hard work and dedication to the team on and off the field over the past four years.
The Crusaders will return to action on Thursday, April 26, when they host Brown at Fitton Field at 5:00 p.m.
