WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) had two doubles, four RBI and scored two runs as the Holy Cross baseball team split with Bucknell in a Patriot League doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fell, 10-5, in the first game and picked up an 11-7 win in game two. The Crusaders are now 13-20 overall and 5-5 in league play while the Bison are 15-19 and 7-5 in the league. Junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) also had a strong day with a 6-for-9 performance at the plate, driving in three RBI and scoring two runs.
In the second game, in the bottom of the first, Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) hit a two-out double to left center field, advancing Oxford to third after reaching on a fielder's choice. A single by senior Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.) scored Gorman and Oxford. With two outs, senior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) and junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles, scoring Hughes. Cupelo scored on a single by freshman Steve Tkowski (Bourne, Mass.), making the score, 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Jack Laurendeau (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A one-out single by Perry drove in Laurendeau. Oxford drove in the second run of the inning on a double to left center, scoring Perry. Gorman reached first on a walk and then a two-out single by Cupelo scored both base runners, giving Holy Cross an 8-0 lead. The Crusaders put a run in the bottom of the third, taking a 9-0 lead while Bucknell scored four runs in the top of the fourth to make the score, 9-4. Trailing by seven runs, Bucknell drove in three runs in the top of the seventh, but Holy Cross held the Bison scoreless for the last two innings, picking up an 11-7 victory.
In game one, Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead with a two-out home run to right field by Sills. In the bottom of third, Laurendeau hit a leadoff single to right field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.). A single by Oxford scored Laurendeau, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Bucknell put up a run in the top of the fourth and one in the fifth, tying the game, 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Twokski picked up a leadoff walk. Junior Rob Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.) pinch ran for Twokski and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Laurendeau. A two-out double to left center field by McCrea scored Dornfried, giving the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. Bucknell put up eight runs in the top of the sixth while Holy Cross scored one in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score 10-5.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 14, traveling to Central Connecticut for a game scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
