WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) went 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBI but the Holy Cross baseball team fell to Bucknell in a Patriot League doubleheader at Fitton Field on Sunday afternoon, losing by scores of 2-1 and 15-3. The Crusaders fall to 12-19 on the season and 4-4 in league play while the Bison improve to 14-18 and 6-4 in the Patriot League.
In the first game, Bucknell's Bob Allen picked a leadoff walk to start the first inning. An error by Holy Cross advanced Allen to second base and then a sacrifice bunt by Ben Yoder moved Allen to third. With two outs, Allen stole home, giving the Bison a 1-0 lead. After four scoreless innings, Bret Sokirka started the top of the fifth reaching first on a Crusader error. A sacrifice bunt by Allen advanced Sokirka to second base. A two-out single to right field by Ben Yoder drove in Sokirka, making the score 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, senior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second base on a groundout play by freshman Chris Sintetos (Bethesda, Md.). A one-out single by sophomore Eddie Bleiler (Sudbury, Mass.) scored Gorman. Bucknell held the Crusaders scoreless for the final two innings, hanging on for a 2-1 win.
Senior Dan Seip (North Carver, Mass.) received the loss for Holy Cross, pitching his second career complete game giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out four batters in seven innings pitched. Trey Frahler picked up the win for the Bison, giving up just four hits and one run while striking out two batters in seven innings.
In game two, trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gorman hit a two-out single and then advanced to third on a double down the right field line by senior Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.). A single by Cupelo scored Gorman and Hughes, making the score, 9-2. The Bison put up three more runs in the top of the seventh and three in the top of the ninth while Holy Cross scored one in the bottom of the ninth, giving Bucknell a 15-3 win.
Junior Matt Shapiro (Raynham, Mass.) received the loss, pitching five and 2/3 innings while giving up nine runs on 10 hits while striking out five batters. Chris Yamaguchi earned the win, giving up two runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter in six and 1/3 innings pitched.
The Crusaders return to action on Monday, April 13, hosting a Patriot League doubleheader against Bucknell. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
