WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with one RBI and junior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) hit a three-run homer as the Holy Cross baseball team defeated Hartford, 12-3, in non-conference action this afternoon at Campus Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 7-15 overall, while the Hawks fall to 7-17.
After three scoreless innings, the Crusaders took a 6-0 lead with six runs in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded, while three runs scored when freshman John Sills (Milton, Mass.) reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to second base on a throwing error as junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.), Hughes and Perry scored on the play. Senior Matt Perron (Auburn, Mass.) drove in the sixth run when he singled in Sills. The Hawks then made it a 6-2 game with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Holy Cross increased its lead to 10-2 with four runs, including a three-run home run by Akashian. The homer is Akashian's team-leading third of the season. The Crusaders added to their lead in the eighth with two runs, including a RBI single to left field by Stampone driving in senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.). Hartford scored a run in the bottom of the ninth for the 12-3 final score.
Sophomore Dan Seip (North Carver, Mass.) earned the win for the Crusaders to improve to 2-3 on the season, as he pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing no runs on no hits.
The Crusaders (4-4 Patriot League) return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army (2-6 Patriot League) in a four-game Patriot League series. Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon, while Sunday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
