WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored, while senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.) went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI as the Holy Cross baseball team swept a doubleheader with Lehigh this afternoon in Patriot League action at Fitton Field, winning by scores of 5-1 and 5-4. The Crusaders sweep the four-game weekend series and improve to 6-14 overall (4-4 Patriot League), while the Mountain Hawks fall to 11-16-1 overall (1-7 Patriot League).
In game one, senior Rob Oteri (Sudbury, Mass.) was outstanding as he pitched six innings allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 2-2 on the season. Roth went 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Crusaders scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the third. Roth hit a one-out double to center field driving in two runs. With two outs junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.) singled in two runs, while Holy Cross scored its fifth run on a Lehigh error. The Mountain Hawks made it a 5-1 game when they scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Junior Mike Thater (Danbury, Conn.) pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout for the 5-1 final score.
In the second game, Perry went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. After the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, the Crusaders answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Perry scored on a pass ball and Roth singled in senior Matt Perron (Auburn, Mass.). In the top of the sixth, Lehigh regained the lead with three runs. But in the bottom of the sixth the Crusaders tied the game with two runs. With two outs, sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.) singled through the left side and Lister hit a ground-rule double. Sophomore Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) then hit a pinch hit single driving in Stampone and Lister.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Perry led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jamie Aldrich (Stratford, Conn.). Perron then drove in the winning run with a single through the left side bringing in Perry. Thater pitched the final two innings allowing no runs on two hits to earn his first save of the season. Freshman Tom Arrigg (Andover, Mass.) earned his first collegiate win as he pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing one run on three hits. Freshman Bobby Holmes (Dedham, Mass.) was solid in his first collegiate start as he allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 10, when they travel to Brookline, Mass., to take on Northeastern at 3:00 p.m.
