WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) went five for eight with three home runs and six runs batted in, to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to a sweep of Army in a doubleheader at Doubleday Field. The Crusaders won the first game 11-2, then posted a 10-4 victory in the nightcap. Holy Cross improves to 12-14 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League with the wins, and has now won seven straight games. Army falls to 10-13 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.
In game one, the Crusaders jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the middle of the third inning, then cruised to the victory. Perry led off the game with a solo home run, then hit a three-run homer in the second inning which put Holy Cross up 5-0. Senior righthanded pitcher Dan Seip (North Carver, Mass.) picked up the victory on the mound, allowing just two runs on seven hits in a complete game performance.
In the second game, Holy Cross took a 7-2 lead by scoring two times in the first, second and third innings, then adding one more run in the top of the fourth. Perry hit a two-run homer in the second inning, then added an RBI double in the fourth to help build the Crusader lead. After Army had trimmed the lead to 7-4, Holy Cross scored three more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away, led by a two-run single from senior outfielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.). Junior righthanded pitcher Tommy Arrigg (Andover, Mass.) earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing just three hits and striking out four in five shutout innings of relief.
Sophomore catcher Eddie Bleiler (Sudbury, Mass.) finished the day three for seven with three runs batted in. Sophomore outfielder Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.), sophomore first baseman Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman outfielder Chris Sintetos (Bethesda, Md.) also added three hits each for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross and Army will conclude their weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m.
