WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Navy this afternoon in the both team's Patriot League opening series this afternoon at Fitton Field, losing by scores of 7-6 and 12-8. The Crusaders fall to 2-11 overall (0-2 Patriot League), while the Midshipmen improve to 20-9 overall (2-0 Patriot League). These two teams wrap up the four-game weekend series with a doubleheader at Fitton Field on Sunday at noon.
In game one, the Midshipmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one in the third, before the Crusaders made it a 3-1 game when sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.) hit a RBI single in the bottom of the third. Holy Cross tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI ground out by senior Jamie Aldrich (Stratford, Conn.) and a RBI double by senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.). Navy took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth with a run and then increased its lead to 7-3 in the sixth on Mitch Harris' three-run homer. The Crusaders rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, but were unable to complete the comeback. Perron had a two-run single in the inning, while Lister added an RBI single. Harris earned the win pitching 6-1/3 innings allowing five runs on six hits while striking out eight. Holy Cross senior starter Scott Hampe (Dedham, Mass.) took the loss, allowing just two earned on seven hits while striking out seven in six innings of work.
In game two, Navy took an early 11-0 lead after 2-1/2 inning of play, with eight runs in the second and three more in the third. Harris hit his second home run of the day in the third inning, this one a two-run shot. The Crusaders would rally to score eight runs in the next four innings, making the score 11-8 after six. Aldrich had a two-run single, while Stampone, Roth and sophomore Joe Moore (Dublin, N.H.) all added RBI singles. But Navy closer J.D. Melton then came in to shut down Holy Cross, throwing 3-2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his sixth save of the season. Mark McCoy earned the win for the Midshipmen, allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings, while sophomore Dan Seip (North Carver, Mass.) took the loss for the Crusaders.
Stampone finished the day going 3-for-8 with three runs batted in, while Aldrich totaled two hits and three runs batted in. In addition, Roth went 5-for-8 with a pair of RBI, while junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.) chipped in with two hits and four runs scored.
