Baseball Defeats Boston College, 8-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) had a three-run home run and double for five RBI to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to an 8-2 win over Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at Fitton Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-14 on the season while the Eagles fall to 14-7. The win also marks the first time Holy Cross has beaten Boston College since 1994, when the Crusaders picked up a 9-1 win on May 1, 1994.
In the bottom of the first inning, junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a leadoff double to left center field and then scored on a single by junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.). Sills scored on a ground out play by Ciardiello taking a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the third, sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) doubled to right center field and then scored on a double by Ciardiello down the right field line, making the score 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) drove in two runners on a triple to center field. With two outs and runners at first and second base, a home run to deep centerfield by Ciardiello put Holy Cross ahead 8-0.
Trailing 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Boston College's Tony Sanchez reached first based on an error and then advanced to second on a passed ball. A double down the right field line by Mickey Wiswall scored Sanchez for the first Eagles' run. A single to left field by Mike Belfoire scored Wiswall, making the score, 8-2.
Sophomore Chris Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) earned his first collegiate win, pitching five innings and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out four batters. Taylor Lasko received the loss for the Eagles after giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three batters in two and 2/3 innings.
The Crusaders return to action on March 28-29, hosting a four-game series versus Lehigh in the Patriot League season-opener. Both days the first game will begin at 12:00 p.m.
