Baseball Falls To Connecticut, 10-3

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Nick Ciardiello(Edison, N.J.) went 2-for-4 including driving in two RBIs but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross baseball team dropped a 10-3 non-conference game to Connecticut today at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fall to 4-12 on the season while the Huskies improve to 10-10 overall.
Connecticut jumped out to a to 3-0 lead in the second inning as John Fatse hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Doug Elliot. Pierre LePage drove in the other two runs on a two-out single for the Huskies. Connecticut rallied in five more in the top of the fourth inning as Elliot struck again, driving in another run on a single and Elliot Glynn hit a grand slam, taking a 8-0 lead.
Holy Cross put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Ciardiello drove in his first RBI of the day on a single. The Crusaders scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Lister scored after reaching third on a strong hit to right-center field.
Ciardiello's double in the bottom of the eighth, scoring junior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.), putting up the final Crusader run of the game. The Huskies' Mike Olt and Peter Fatse hit back-to-back home run, securing a 10-3 victory for Connecticut.
Dusty Odenbach earned the win for the Huskies, pitching four innings and scattering four hits while striking out three and walking three batters. Sophomore Matt Shapiro (Raynham, Mass.) received the loss, allowing four hits, five runs, while striking out one and allowing two walks.
The Crusaders return to action tomorrow, March 26, against Boston College at 3:00 p.m.
