Baseball Falls To Connecticut, 9-3

STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Eddie Bleiler (Sudbury, Mass.) went 2-for-4 including a run scored but the Holy Cross baseball team fell to Connecticut, 9-3, on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-14 while the Huskies improve to 8-10.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Bleiler hit a leadoff single for Holy Cross and then advanced to second base as sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Jack Laurendeau (Sudbury, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Bleiler advanced to third on an error to load the bases. Junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) hit into a double play but was able to score Bleiler to tie the game. With two outs, sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) reached on a walk and then a single by senior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) scored McCrea and advanced Oxford to third. A single to center field by senior Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.) scored Oxford, giving the Crusaders a 3-1 lead. Connecticut held Holy Cross scoreless for the remainder of the game while putting up four runs in the bottom of the third, one run in the bottom of the seventh and three runs in the bottom of the eighth, winning 9-3.

Freshman John Pedrotty (Portsmouth, R.I.) received the loss for the Crusaders, giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out three batters in five and 1/3 innings. D. Jennings earned the win for the Huskies, pitching five innings and giving up three runs on six hits while striking out three.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, March 25, hosting Boston College at 5:00 p.m.
