HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac baseball field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 5-13 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 3-11 overall.
After four scoreless innings, Holy Cross struck in the top of the fifth inning with a leadoff single by senior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.). Cupelo advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Chris Sintetos (Bethesda, Md.) and then to third on a wild pitch. A two-out double to right center field by sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored Cupelo for the first Crusader run. Junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) singled to left field, advancing McCrea to third base. A single up the left field line by Sills drove in McCrea, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Perry doubled down the left field line and then advanced on a single to left field by Sills, making the score, 3-1.
Quinnipiac put up its lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a leadoff double down the left field line by Farina. A two-out single up the middle drove in Farina, making the final score, 3-1.
Junior Matt Shapiro (Raynham, Mass.) picked up the win with seven and 2/3 innings pitched, scattering six hits and allowing one run while striking out two batters. Holy Cross' Ryan George (Seekonk, Mass.) earned his third save of the season, pitching one and 1/3 innings, striking out two batters and giving up just one hit. The Bobcats' Joe Duffy (0-3) received the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in six and 2/3 innings pitched while striking out five batters.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, March 24, traveling to Connecticut for a game scheduled at 3:00 p.m.
