WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) went 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Holy Cross baseball team split with Bryant in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fell, 4-2, in the first game and picked up a 5-3 win in the second game. The Crusaders are now 2-11 while the Bulldogs are 10-5. Sophomore Jack Laurendeau (Sudbury, Mass.) finished the day with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game, Bryant's Pat McKenna started the game with a single to left field and then advanced to second base on a walk picked up by Dylan Stone. A sacrifice bunt by Nick Campbell advanced both base runners and a double to right field by O'Connor scored McKenna and Stone. A one-out double by Vigurs to right field scored O'Connor, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of third, senior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) hit a leadoff single to left field and then advanced on a walk picked up by junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.). A single by sophomore Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) loaded the bases and Laurendeau scored two runs on a double to right field. Sills singled up the middle, scoring McCrea and Laurendeau. Advancing on a wild pitch and then a catcher's error, Sills scored the fifth run of the inning for Holy Cross on a single by Oxford.
The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the seventh as singles by DelPonte, Stone and Campbell loaded the bases with one out. The Crusaders picked up the two final outs on a strike out by junior Ryan Geroge (Seekonk, Mass.) and an unassisted out by Oxford, securing the 5-3 win.
Freshman Matt Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate win on the mound, pitching four and 1/3 innings while giving up three runs on six hits while striking out one batter. George picked up his second straight save of the season.
In Game One, Bryant jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as Pat O'Connor picked up a leadoff walk and then scored on a two-run home run by Jeff Virgus. Junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) walked to start the bottom of the fourth inning and then stole second. Sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) picked up a walk and a single to right center field by sophomore Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) scored Sills. A one-out single by freshman John Pedrotty (Portsmouth, R.I.) drove in Oxford, tying the game, 2-2. In the of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs pulled ahead, as Jamie Skagerlind hit a two-run homer to left field, securing a 4-2 win.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, March 18, hosting Siena at 3:00 p.m.
