Holy Cross Baseball Tops Davidson, 6-4

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Senior Norm Roth (Orange, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and senior starter Rob Oteri (Sudbury) earned the win as the Holy Cross baseball team defeated Davidson, 6-4, this morning in non-conference action at Wilson Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-8 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 9-3.

Holy Cross scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. With one out, sophomore Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, which was then followed by a single by Roth as Gorman advanced to third and Roth to second on a throwing error. Junior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) then drove in Gorman and advanced Roth to third on a ground out to first base. Sophomore Tyler Stampone (Meadowbrook, Pa.) then singled with two outs through the left side bringing Roth into score.

In the top of the second, the Crusaders increased their lead to 3-0 when sophomore Joe Moore (Dublin, N.H.) scored on a wild pitch. Holy Cross made it a 4-0 game in the third with a RBI double to left field by senior Andrew Tenaglia (Duxbury, Mass.) driving in Akashian who had walked.

Roth gave the Crusaders a 5-0 advantage in the fifth when he hit a solo homer down the left field line for his second home run of the season. In the sixth, junior Kyle Lister (Lincoln, R.I.) increased the Holy Cross lead to 6-0 with a solo homer of his own for his first home run of the season.

In the bottom is the sixth the Wildcats got on the scoreboard with two runs and then made it a 6-4 game when Matt Webb hit a two-run homer down the left field line.

Davidson had the winning run at the plate and runners on first and second with one out, but senior Scott Hampe (Dedham, Mass.) forced a 4-6-3 double play to the end the game and to earn his first save of the season as he pitched two scoreless innings on one hit and one strikeout. Oteri had a strong outing to earn the win and improve to 1-1 on the season, as he allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

The Crusaders return to action when they host Assumption in the home-opener at Fitton Field at 3:00 p.m.
