Holy Cross Baseball Falls To #5 Arizona State 11-3

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State first baseman Mike Leach went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three runs batted in, to lead the fifth-ranked Sun Devils to an 11-3 victory over the Holy Cross baseball team at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. Sophomore first baseman Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) led the Crusaders by hitting his first home run of the year, a two-run shot. Holy Cross falls to 0-8 on the season with the loss, while Arizona State improves to 11-1.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings of play, scoring five runs in the second inning and three more runs in the third. Leake hit a two-run triple in the second inning, while second baseman Zack MacPhee added a two-run double. Holy Cross made the score 8-2 in the top of the fourth inning, when junior shortstop John Sills (Milton, Mass.) walked and scored on Oxford's two-run homer.
Arizona State added two more runs in the fifth inning, on a two-run double by centerfielder Jason Kipnis. The Crusaders scored their final run in the seventh inning, on an RBI single by junior third baseman Mike Galvin (Newport, R.I.). Galvin knocked in senior catcher Tim Hughes (Andover, Mass.), who had been hit by a pitch. The Sun Devils then concluded the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Mitchell Lambson earned the win for Arizona State, allowing one run on two hits in 3-2/3 innings of relief. Junior Matt Shapiro (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss for Holy Cross, giving up eight runs on seven hits in 2-1/3 innings. Freshman Nate Koneski (North Dighton, Mass.) pitched well in relief for the Crusaders, allowing just one run on five hits in 3-1/3 innings.
Holy Cross is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March
10, with a 3:00 p.m. game against Marist.
