Baseball Falls To #5 Arizona State, 12-1

TEMPLE, Ariz. - The Holy Cross baseball team fell to No. 5 Arizona State, 12-1, on Friday night at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-7 on the season while the Sun Devils improve to 10-1 overall. Sophomore Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) went 1-for-3 on the day, driving in the lone Holy Cross run.
Trailing 6-0 entering the top of the fourth inning, Holy Cross' junior John Sills (Milton, Mass.) hit a leadoff single. With one out, senior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) struck out swinging, allowing Sills to steal second base. A two-out single by Ciardiello through the left side scored Sills. The Sun Devils remained hot at the plate, bringing in one run in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh inning, picking up a 12-1 victory.
The Crusaders' junior Bobby Holmes (Dedham, Mass.) received the loss, pitching five and 1/3 innings and striking out a season-high six batters. Arizona State's Matt Newman picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing three hits, one run while striking out eight batters.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 7, closing out a three-game series against No. 5 Arizona State with a game at 2:00 p.m.(ET)
