WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team has released its 2014 schedule, as announced by athletic director Richard M. Regan Jr. and head coach Greg DiCenzo. The squad will play a total of 51 games, including 16 at Fitton Field. The season will begin with a trip to Starkville, Miss. to take on the 2013 NCAA College World Series runner-up, Mississippi State, in a four-game series from Feb. 21-23. The Crusaders will play three opponents this year that played in last season's NCAA tournament.
After the four-game series against the Bulldogs, the team will embark on a one-week trip through the southeast United States. Holy Cross will begin the trip at Charleston Southern on March 1-3. On March 5, the Crusaders will stop in Savannah, Ga. to take on Savannah State in a one-game matchup. Following the contest against Savannah State, Holy Cross will head to Statesboro, Ga. to face off in a three-game weekend series versus Georgia Southern on March 7-9.
The three-game series against Georgia Southern marks the end of the southern road trip, as the Crusaders return to the northeast on March 15-16 with a three-game series versus St. John's. Following the weekend matchup against the Red Storm, the Crusaders will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on the Eagles of Boston College in a weekday game on March 18.
The Crusaders will then play a doubleheader home-and-home series versus Yale on March 22-23. Holy Cross' home opener will be played on March 23 against the Bulldogs. The team will travel to Massachusetts on March 25, before they return home to play seven straight games at Fitton Field. In the seven-game home stand the Crusaders will entertain Harvard (March 26), Lafayette (March 29-30), Hartford (April 1) and Marist (April 2). The squad will then travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on the Navy Midshipmen in a weekend-doubleheader series on April 5-6. On April 8, the Crusaders return home for a non-conference matchup against Central Connecticut.
Following a road game at Dartmouth on April 9, the team will play its next eight out of 10 games against Patriot League opponents. Holy Cross will travel to face Lehigh in a weekend series on April 12-13, before it travels to Brown for a mid-week doubleheader on April 16. The Crusaders will then return home to take on two-time defending Patriot League champion, Army, on April 19-20.
The team will host Maine on Tuesday, April 22, before heading on another road trip through New York and Pennsylvania. The Crusaders will play a non-conference game at Siena (April 23) before wrapping up Patriot League action on April 26-27 against Bucknell.
Holy Cross will aim to reach the Patriot League Baseball Tournament for the sixth time in seven years under DiCenzo. The league semifinals will take place on May 10-11, while the championship game is slated for the weekend of May 17-18.
The Crusaders finished the 2013 season with a 28-25 overall record and a 15-5 mark in the conference, which was the best in school history. The Crusaders captured the Patriot League regular season title, but fell short in the Patriot League Championship against Army.
