Baseball To Hold Ninth Annual Leadoff Dinner

WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross baseball head coach Greg DiCenzo and the rest of the 2013 baseball team will host the ninth annual Leadoff Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 2 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. This year's event will have current Portland Sea Dogs hitting coach and Worcester native, Rich Gedman, as well as honored guest Pete Frates.

Gedman enters his first season as the Sea Dogs' hitting coach. He served in the same capacity for the Salem Red Sox in 2012 and the Lowell Spinners in 2011. Previously, he managed six seasons for the Worcester Tornadoes (2005-2010) in the independent Can-Am League. Before managing Worcester, Gedman served as the bench coach for the Can-Am League's North Shore Spirit. A native of Worcester, Mass., Gedman signed with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent in 1977 and played 13 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Red Sox (1980-1990), Houston Astros (1990) and St. Louis Cardinals (1991-1992). A career .252 hitter with 88 home runs and 382 RBIs, he earned a pair of All-Star selections in 1985 and 1986. He was the Red Sox catcher for the 1986 American League pennant run, and caught Roger Clemens' first 20-strikeout game on April 29, 1986.

Frates grew up in Beverly, Mass. and attended St. John's Preparatory School '03 and Boston College '07. At St. John's Prep, he was a four-year member of the football, hockey and baseball teams, a school leader and an honor roll student. At Boston College he majored in communications and history, lived on campus and played for the BC baseball team becoming its captain in his senior year. During his college years, he played summer ball in Maryland, Connecticut and Hawaii. After college, he went to Hamburg, Germany to play baseball in the German Baseball League while coaching German youth on the sport. He was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease and is involved with the Pete Frates #3 Fund.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and cash bar, followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. Members of the 2013 Holy Cross baseball team and their families will be in attendance along with many alumni and friends.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 per person or $75 for Holy Cross alumni and friends from classes 2007-2012. All proceeds will directly fund this year's spring trips.
