WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball head coach Greg DiCenzo has announced that upcoming junior Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and senior John Colella (Herndon, Va.) have been named co-captains for the 2013 season.
Ahmed is the first junior to be named captain since John Sills in 2009. He was named to the first team All-Patriot League for the third base position as a sophomore. During Patriot League play, Ahmed led all conference players in runs scored (19), hits (28), home runs (4), doubles (7) and RBI (15). He finished the season batting .295 and led the team in home runs (7), total bases (101), runs scored (39), and doubles (13). He was also a factor on the mound as he posted a 2-1 record with a 3.24 ERA in 13 appearances.
Colella was a first team All-Patriot League pick and named the team's MVP for his performances on the mound this past season. As a junior, Colella led the team and Patriot League with 11 total saves, setting a new single-season record for the Holy Cross baseball program. The righty broke the Holy Cross career saves record back on March 31 against Bucknell and now has 20 saves in his career. He completed the 2012 slate with a record of 6-1 and boasted a team-low 2.32 ERA. He struck out 53 batters in 29 appearances.
Both captains will be competing in the Cape Cod Baseball league this upcoming summer. Ahmed will play for the Bourne Braves while Colella has earned a spot on the Falmouth Commodores squad. The two teams play against each other on Sunday, June 17 in Falmouth, Mass.
