WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball head coach Greg DiCenzo has been named the Worcester area Baseball Coach of the Year as announced after a vote by sports information directors representing the 10 Worcester area colleges and universities. Senior southpaw Nate Koneski (North Dighton, Mass.) earned another major award as he was named the Worcester Area Pitcher of the Year. This is the second year for the awards.
DiCenzo has led the Holy Cross Crusaders to their second Patriot League Championship series in three seasons. The team's 33 wins is a program-best, breaking the previous record of 30 wins, set back in 1921. The 13-7 Patriot League record set by DiCenzo's squad is also a program-high, besting the 11 wins by the 1991 Crusaders. Koneski had a stellar season on the mound as he posts a 7-3 record and 2.43 ERA. His 82 strikeouts are a team and career-best. He ranks second all-time in program records with 227 career strikeouts.
Koneski was also named a first team All-Star and is joined by juniors Jordan Enos (Stockton, Calif.), Patrick Puentes (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and John Colella (Herndon, Va.) and sophomore Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Juniors Alex Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Tom Marra (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and sophomore Brandon Cipolla (Abington, Mass.) were named to the second team.
Holy Cross (33-21) is two games into the Patriot League Championship series as the squad split with No. 1 seed Army (40-13) in yesterday's action, winning 7-4 and losing 4-0. The winner of game three will take home the 2012 Patriot League Championship crown.
