WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior pitcher Nate Koneski (North Dighton, Mass.) and sophomore third baseman Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) have been named the Patriot League Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 23-29. Both players earn the honor for the first time this season as Holy Cross finished the 2012 regular season with a 29-20 record, including three wins and three losses last week. The 29 wins are the most by the program since 1925.
Koneski and Ahmed were major factors in the team's weekend split against Army, a team that came into the weekend with a perfect 16-0 record in conference play. Koneski tossed a two-hit shutout against the Black Knights in Sunday's first game, pitching the full seven innings to pick up his second complete game of the season. The lefty struck out seven batters and walked one. He now has 68 strikeouts this season, a career-best, and leads the league in that category.
Ahmed boosted the Crusaders offense with a .304 batting average in six contests last week. He collected four RBI, all coming against Army and had four extra-base hits, including two home runs and two doubles, also coming against the Black Knights. He was also a factor on the mound, appearing in two games last week. He pitched a one inning shutout against Army in game two on Saturday, earning the winning decision. He held an ERA of 0.00 in 3.2 innings of work and struck out five on the week.
Ahmed now has seven home runs this season, first amongst all Patriot League batters. He also has 12 doubles, leading the team. He holds a 2-1 record on the mound with a 3.77 ERA.
The Crusaders will play as the No. 2 seed in the 2012 Patriot League Tournament, which begins the weekend of May 12-13. The squad will host No. 3 seed and reigning Patriot League champion, Navy, in the best-of-three series. Times will be announced at a later date.
