John Colella Receives Hop Riopel Award

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior right-handed pitcher John Colella (Herndon, Va.), a member of the Holy Cross baseball team, has received the 2012 Hop Riopel Award. The Riopel Award is presented each year to the most valuable player of the Crusader baseball team. The honor was given to Colella by the Holy Cross Varsity Club.

Colella holds a team-leading 2.22 ERA this season in 44.2 innings pitched. He has recorded a team and league-best nine saves and broke the Holy Cross career saves record earlier this year against Bucknell. He posts a record of 4-1 with 42 strikeouts, second highest amongst the Crusader pitching staff. His 22 appearances are a team-high while his nine saves tie the single-season saves record, set by himself last season.

Over the course of his three years on the mound, he has combined to strike out 95 batters and boasts a career record of 7-5. He has 18 saves in 55 career appearances. He has pitched in 108 full innings thus far.
