Crusaders Come Up Short At Winthrop, 3-2

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Holy Cross baseball team scored twice in the first inning but could not find another offensive spark, falling to Winthrop, 3-2, at the Winthrop Ballpark. With the decision, the squad moves to 4-6 on the season while the Eagles go to 2-13. Junior Patrick Puentes (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led the squad offensively on the day, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, sophomore Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) doubled to get into scoring position. Puentes tallied his first RBI of the season one at-bat later, sending home Ahmed with a single. Fellow junior Stephen Wadsworth (Wayland, Mass.) collected the second RBI, singling to left center to score senior Chris Sintetos (Bethesda, Md.). Senior starter Matt Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Y.) shut down the Eagles in his first inning of work from the mound, facing just three batters to keep the Crusaders ahead, 2-0.

Winthrop came back to score three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 3-2 lead. Croglio allowed no runs in the fourth and fifth innings before being relieved in the bottom of the sixth with one out and runners on second and third. Sophomore Andrew Boyce (Avon, Conn.) took over the duties on the mound and picked up two quick outs to keep the score at 3-2. The Crusaders scattered three hits from the fourth through seventh innings, getting runners into scoring position twice, but not capitalizing on runs. Winthrop pitching continued to shut down the Crusaders as the squad went down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings. With the final outs, Holy Cross finished down by the final 3-2 score.

Croglio picked up the losing decision in the affair, falling to 1-1 on the season. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three in 5.1 innings pitched. Boyce pitched a strong 2.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Winthrop's starter, Eric Ruth, earned the win, improving to 1-1 overall. He pitched eight innings, allowing two runs, all unearned, on eight hits while striking out 13. In all, Holy Cross collected two runs on eight hits and committed one error. Winthrop scored three runs on seven hits in all.

Holy Cross finishes up the series against Winthrop on Sunday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m. The game will be played at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.
