WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross outfielder, freshman Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, announced by the conference. He takes home the award after batting .455 (5-of-11) in the three-game series against the nationally-ranked Texas A&M Aggies.
In his collegiate debut on Friday night, Ocello went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and one run scored in the Crusaders' 3-2 loss in 11 innings. On Saturday, he went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and one run scored as Holy Cross upset the nation's No. 4-ranked team 7-3 in 10 innings. He finished the week striking out just once in his 11 at-bats.
Ocello comes to Holy Cross after playing three years of varsity baseball at Oaks Christian in Westlake, Calif. As a senior, he was named the team MVP and the Tri-Valley League MVP. He currently holds his high school's single-season and career records for hits, runs scored and stolen bases.
The Crusaders, who are now 1-2 on the season, return to action on Saturday, March 3, competing in the Campbell Invitational Tournament, hosted by Campbell. The Crusaders will first face North Carolina Central at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. All games will be held on Taylor Field in Buies Creek, N.C.
