WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior outfielder Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.) has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time in his career. With four home runs in five games last week, Ciardiello became the all-time leader in Holy Cross annals with 23 long balls in his career.
After belting one in a loss to Central Connecticut State on Monday, Ciardiello hit a home run in each end of Sunday's doubleheader with Lafayette, including a solo shot to lead Holy Cross to a 6-5 win in the opener. His home run in game two broke the Holy Cross career record and Ciardiello added another in the series finale to lift the Crusaders to a 14-10 win and a split of the four-game set.
He batted seven-for-20 with four home runs and six RBI on the week, tallying three games with two hits or more. Ciardiello also pulled into a tie for eighth in Patriot League history with the 23 home runs. On the season, he bats .333 with 24 runs, 44 hits and 36 RBI. He leads the team in RBI and total bases (78).
Holy Cross (17-19-1) hosts Brown (8-21) for mid-week non-conference action on Wednesday, April 20. The original doubleheader has now been changed to a single, nine-innin game. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. on Fitton Field in Worcester, Mass.
