Baseball Splits Day/Night Doubleheader With Bucknell
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore catcher Stephen Wadsworth (Wayland, Mass.) found his groove at the plate, leading the team with five hits on the day as the Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader against Bucknell, winning out 8-5 and losing by the exact same score in the second game. With the day's results, the Crusaders settle for a record of 13-16-1 (1-5 PL) while the Bison move to 13-18 (2-4 PL) on the season. Junior southpaw John Pedrotty (Portsmouth, R.I.) also had another solid outing on the mound, earning his fifth win of the year in game one.
The Crusaders wasted no time getting off to a hot start in the first inning, when senior first-baseman Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) blasted a two-run line drive homer to center field, scoring senior right-fielder Jack Laurendeau (Sudbury,Mass.), who had led the game off with a single. Bucknell scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to bring the score to 2-1, but Holy Cross answered right back, when sophomore Josh Olson (Woodbury, Minn.) notched an RBI single to center field, scoring senior left-fielder Nick Ciardiello (Edison, N.J.), which brought the score to 3-1. The Bucknell second baseman, Travis Clark, hit his first of three home runs on the day to bring the score to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
Once again, the Crusaders stormed back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth off of a two RBI single by senior center-fielder Brendan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.). Holy Cross was able to add three runs in the bottom of the fifth, when an RBI single by freshman third baseman Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and a two RBI single by Laurendeau brought the score to 8-2. Late surges by the Bison in the sixth and seventh innings were not enough to spoil the Crusader lead, and the Crusaders took game one, 8-5.
Laurendeau went 3-3 with 2 RBIs and Wadsworth had a solid day at the plate, going 3-4 from the dish. Pedrotty got the win, improving to 5-2, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up five runs, striking out seven, and walking three. Sophomore reliever John Colella (Herndon, Va.) pitched an inning, giving up no runs on one hit. Seeley got the loss for the Bison and fell to 1-5 on the season.
After two Bucknell runs scored in the top half of the second inning, the Crusaders by tallying two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, with Wadsworth registering his second home run of the season on a two-run blast to center field. After Oxford drove in a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-2, the Bison were able to score three big runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by another homer by Clark. The Crusaders stormed back by putting up two runs of their own to tie the game at five in the bottom of the sixth on RBI from Olson and sophomore shortstop Alex Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
In the top of the eighth, the Bison were able to get a go-ahead run on Clark's third home run of the day and tacked on two more in the top of the ninth to give them an 8-5 advantage, which was all they needed, as their reliever, Alex Cillo, shut the door.
Cillo picks up the win for the Bison, improving to 1-0. Junior starter Matt Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Y.) pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 10 hits, five runs, and striking out five. Sophomore reliever Andrew Boyce (Avon, Conn.) got the loss, after pitching 2.2 innings, and giving up just one hit, which was the go-ahead home run by Clark. Sophomore reliever Tom Marra (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) pitched the ninth, giving up two unearned runs.
Wadsworth had another solid game at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBI.
The Crusaders return to action tomorrow, Sunday April 10th at 12:00 p.m. where they will conclude the four game series against the Bison.
