Baseball Announces 2011 Freshman Class
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head baseball coach Greg DiCenzo has announced the commitments of eight players who will join the Holy Cross program in the spring of 2011. Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Andrew Barry (Puyallup, Wash.), Brandon Cipolla (Boston, Mass.), Ryan Doerhoff (Flower Mound, Texas), Parker Fulkerson (Terre Haute, Ind.), John Kearns (Los Angeles, Calif.), Kyle Stearns (Orlando Park, Ill.) and Nate Walker (San Diego, Calif.) will all play baseball for the Crusaders.
"The entire Holy Cross baseball community should be incredibly excited about each of these individuals arriving to college hill," said DiCenzo. "I believe that many of these players have an opportunity to significantly contribute early in their careers and our coaching staff is eager to work with them on a daily basis."
Ahmed is a shortstop who played for East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, Mass. He was named the 2010 Western Mass. Co-Player of the Year and was a two-time first team All-Western Massachusetts selection. He helped East Longmeadow win four straight Valley Wheel league championships and the 2007 Western Massachusetts championship.
Barry is an infielder who played for Puyallup High School in Puyallup, Wash. He was named to the 2009 Seattle Times All-SPSL 4A South first team and the 2010 All-SPSL 4A South second team. As a junior, he batted .464 with 13 hits and 11 RBI, helping his team to a 12-1 record. He also played for the Puget Sound Roxx club team as well.
Cipolla is an outfielder who played for Boston College High School in Dorchester, Mass. He was named to the 2010 All-Catholic Conference team and was a 2010 Boston Globe Catholic Conference All-Star. As a senior, he batted .403, collecting 27 hits and 13 RBI. He helped Boston College to a 22-5 record and the Division I state championship his senior year as well.
Doerhoff is a third baseman who played four seasons of varsity baseball for Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas. He was named the 2010 TAAPS 5A Offensive Player of the Year and set the school record in highest slugging percentage (1.000 as a senior). He was a first team All-District selection, helping his team to win the TAPPS 5A district championship in 2008 and 2010. He also played for the D-Bat Mustangs Baseball Club.
Fulkerson is a shortstop who played three seasons of varsity baseball for Terre Haute North Vigo High School in Terre Haute, Ind. He was a two-time All-Wabash Valley first team selection and was selected first team All-Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference in 2009 and 2010. He helped his team capture the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship in 2010 as well. He also played for the Wayne Newton Post 346 team, who won the 2010 Indiana state club championship.
Kearns is a pitcher who played two seasons of varsity baseball at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif. He went 11-3 with a 2.70 ERA over his career, going 4-2 with a 1.81 ERA as a junior. He helped Crespi Carmelite win the Mission League championship in 2010 and the CIF championship his junior season.
Stearns is an infielder who played two seasons of varsity baseball at St. Rita High School in Chicago, Ill. He batted .415 with 17 doubles as a senior and batted .385 as a junior. He helped St. Rita to a second place finish in the Illinois state championship in 2009 and 2010. He also played club baseball for the Illinois Sparks.
Walker is a pitcher who played two seasons of varsity baseball at Torrey Pines High School High School in San Diego, Calif. In his career he went 7-0, with a 2.31 ERA, recording 61 strikeouts. He ranks first in his high school record books in winning percentage (1.000) and third in ERA. He was named to the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic team and was an All-Avocado League honorable mention in 2009 and 2010. He also helped his team win the 2009 Avocado League championship.
