2010-2011 Holy Cross Athletics Community Service Activities
At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.
Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams were involved in community service projects during the 2010-2011 school year.
• 2010-11: Members of the team maintained their
relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters
program.
• 9/15/10: Members of the team volunteered for the United Way
Day of Caring.
• 9/26/10: Nate Koneski, Chris Kono and Matt Croglio took
part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
• 10/5/10: Members of the team volunteered for Cures for
Kids, a program a Holy Cross student set up with HC athletics to
have teams adopt a child/children in an effort to spend time with
less fortunate kids.
• 10/10/10: 2 players took part in Reading Day at Worcester
Arts Magnet School.
• 10/13/10: 5 Members of the team volunteered for Catholic
Charities, loading a truck of food at the Worcester County Food

• 11/12/10: Coach DiCenzo and 2 players took part in the
RESPECT program at Burncoat High School.
• 1/13/11: Coaches DiCenzo and Kane volunteered for Catholic

• 11/17/10: Coach DiCenzo and 2 players took part in the
RESPECT program at Worcester South High School.
• 2/5/11: Coach DiCenzo, his coaching staff and 4
players spent the afternoon working with the Cannonball Foundation,
an organization with a mission to increase participation in the
playing of baseball among youth in low-income urban
communities. This took place at Worcester's indoor batting
facility, the Strike Zone. Its specially designed programs
provide baseball and leadership skill-building opportunities for
players, parents and coaches that encourage them to sustain a
connection to our national pastime.

• 9/26/10: Members of the team took part in the Annual
UMASS Walk for Cancer.
• Nov. 2010: Coaches Brown and Engelstad participated in
Shots from the Heart, a project created by CollegeInsider.com to
help raise awareness for the growing problem of heart disease. They
will compete against other college basketball coaches from around
the nation in a free throw shooting tournament, which will benefit
the American Heart Association.
• 1/8/11: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Autograph

• 4/12/11: Dee Goens, Eric Obeysekere, Jordan Stevens and
Phil Beans took part in Reading Day at Pakachoag School.

Kids’ Day Clinic prior to the football game.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
• 3/14/11: Coach Tucker, Jill Caffrey and Kelly Sotsky took
part in the RESPECT program at Burncoat High School.

Jaclyn’s Foundation. This is a program where the team
adopted Aaron Gray, a young fan with brain cancer.

programs at the Nativity School and local YMCA a few days a week
throughout the school year.
• Fall ’10: Each Friday before a home game, members of
the team visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets to help
get the community more involved with HC Football.
• 10/2/10: The team hosted a Pink Zone game and wore pink
shoe laces in honor of breast cancer awareness.

for Hope" campaign at the Head of the Charles Regatta. This
is a breast cancer awareness event.

the Benching for Breast Cancer event.
• Spring 2011: Members of the men’s team continued to
clean the East Side Trail System through Green Hill Park and
adjacent parts of the city, benefiting the Greater Worcester Land
Trust.
• 8/28/10: Members of the team volunteered at the Holy
Cross Freshmen Move-In Day.
• 12/10/10: Members of the team took part in the Benching for
Breast Cancer event.
• 3/16/11: Coach Priestly and 2 players took part in the
RESPECT program at Worcester South High School.
• 2010-11: Members of the team maintained their
relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters
program.
• 2010-11: Maura Fox spent Sundays volunteering at UMass
Memorial Hospital. One special Sunday, Maura, along with
teammates Kelsey Dillon, Tricia Giglio and Coach Gallagher, donated
an iPad to the Pediatric Unit from the funds raised through blanket
sales at their games.
• 2010-11: Members of the team participated in HC Goes
Unified, a group that helps mentally handicapped individuals by
building awareness about the abuse of the word
‘retarded’. They playing basketball with
handicapped members of the community and helping organize the
Special Olympics.
• 2010-11: The team is participated in the Catholic
Relief Services’ Rice Bowl Campaign, where they left rice
bowls in their rooms to collect change for children all over the
world in an effort to fight hunger.
• 11/18/10: Michaela Morgan took part in the RESPECT program
at Worcester Technical High School.
• 11/19/10: Kelsey Dillon and Lauren Wright took part in the
RESPECT program at Claremont Academy.
• 12/10/10: Members of the team took part in the Benching for
Breast Cancer event.
• 3/17/11: Coach Gallagher and 2 players took part in the
RESPECT program at Worcester North High School.
• 3/26/11: The team participated in Holy Cross Cares Day, as
Kelsey Dillon is on the organizational committee.
