2009-2010 Holy Cross Athletics Community Service Activities

At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams were involved in community service projects during the 2009-2010 school year.

Baseball

  • Members of the team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • 10/8/09:  Coaches and athletes from the team put on 3 sessions on "Navigating the College Recruiting Process" and "Balancing the Academics and Athletics at the Collegiate Level".  The presentation was given for the MSSAA (Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association) at their Fall Conference for the National Honor Society (NHS) held at the Hogan Center at Holy Cross.
  • 9/13/09: Members of the team took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.  
  • 2/8/10: Members of the team volunteered for Catholic Charities, loading trucks of food at the Worcester County Food Bank and unloading them at a Worcester food pantry.  Photo Gallery  
  • 2/14/10: The coaching staff offered a free Little League Coaches clinic for 75 local coaches and league representatives.
  • 3/27/10: Members of the team took part in the Annual Holy Cross Cares Day.  Photo Gallery 
  • 4/3/10: The team promoted Armed Forces Day as they hosted Army for the weekend.  They donated $500 to the Homebase Program, a partnership between the Boston Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital that is dedicated to improving the lives of veterans who have been exposed to combat-related stress after being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
  • 4/26/10 - Coaches and players held a Little League clinic in Boylston.

Men's Basketball

  • Sep. ‘09: Members of the team, along with Coaches Sanchez and Daiganault, attended and spoke at the five Worcester High School Athletic Wellness Meetings/Education Youth Workshops throughout the month.
  • 9/13/09: The team took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.

  • 10/14/09: Coach Gibbons and members of the team hosted an afternoon with 50 students from Worcester Middle School. They got a campus tour, clinic, then a pizza dinner with the players. Photo Gallery

  • 1/2/10: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Polaroid Event.  Donations raised were given to the American Cancer Society.

  • 4/15/10: Coach Gibbons and 2 players took part in Reading Day at Venerini Academy.
  • 4/26/10: Coach Gibbons and 2 players took part in Reading Day at Julia Bancroft Elementary.  
  • 4/29/10:  The team held a clinic for the Shamrocks AAU and St Josephs Youth Basketball programs. 

Cheerleading

  • Members of the squad maintained their relationship as a big sister in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • 9/12/09: The squad helped run the Annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic prior to the football game.
  • 9/13/09: The squad took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • 2/1/10: Chelsea Dwyer and Liz Parker took part in the Friendly’s Scoop Off, an event to raise awareness for Easter Seals.

Men's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • 10/8/09:  Coaches and athletes from the team put on 3 sessions on "Navigating the College Recruiting Process" and "Balancing the Academics and Athletics at the Collegiate Level".  The presentation was given for the MSSAA (Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association) at their Fall Conference for the National Honor Society (NHS) held at the Hogan Center at Holy Cross.

Women's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • Members of the team dedicated their season to the "Free to Play" Organization. How it worked was that members of the team gave a little bit of money any time someone accomplished a feat.  At the end of the season, the money was donated to the "Free to Play" Organization which helps underprivileged girls around the world.  The following system was set in place for the team: .05/setting a new personal record, .15/qualifying for New Englands, .25/qualifying for ECACS and .50/breaking a school record.

  • 9/26/09: Members of the team took part in the Annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • 10/8/09:  Coaches and athletes from the team put on 3 sessions on "Navigating the College Recruiting Process" and "Balancing the Academics and Athletics at the Collegiate Level".  The presentation was given for the MSSAA (Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association) at their Fall Conference for the National Honor Society (NHS) held at the Hogan Center at Holy Cross.
  • 10/31/09: Members of the team took part in Operation Smile’s ‘Miles for Smiles’.  This is a 3 mile run/walk all over campus with proceeds benefiting children around the world that have been born with cleft-palates. 
  • 3/22/10: Members of the team took part in the MYCity Program.  This is a 21st Century Community Learning Centers after school program operating in some Worcester Public Schools. They take students having trouble in school (they are all recent immigrants coming from an amazing number of countries around the world) out into our city to meet and interview fascinating people in an attempt to solve a local problem through our local government process. This semester, the topic is PLAY, and the problem the children are preparing to address is the length of recess at their schools, so came to HC to interview the athletes and watch them at practice.

Football

  • Members of the team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • Members of the team took part in the after school programs at the Nativity School and local YMCA a few days a week throughout the school year.
  • Fall ’09: Each Friday before a home game, members of the team visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets to help get the community more involved with HC Football.
  • 9/12/09: Members of the team hosted the Annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic. Photo Gallery
  • 10/24/09: Members of the team wore pink shoe laces in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.  
  •  Spring 2010: Members of the team took part in Friends of Jaclyn’s Foundation.  This is a program where the team adopted Aaron Gray, a young fan with brain cancer.

  • 4/23/10: Members of the team took part in a bone marrow testing program. 

Men's & Women's Golf

  • 12/10/09: Sophomore Madison Horl organized the annual Benching for Breast Cancer event, which raised over $1,500 to help fight breast cancer. Photo Gallery
  • Members of both teams initiated a relationship with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Men's Ice Hockey

  • Fall ’09: Members of team took part in the Annual DEAFinitley Hockey Program, a Learn-to-Skate program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • 9/13/09: Members of the team took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.

  • 2/1/10: Erik Vos and Rob Linsmayer took part in the Friendly’s Scoop Off, an event to raise awareness for Easter Seals.
  • 2/13/10: The team hosted Pink Zone at the game to benefit breast cancer research.  Their pink jerseys were auctioned off at the end of the game.

  • In memory of a former co-captain who passed away, every member of the team volunteered as John’s Brothers … mentors with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, matched with students at an ethnically diverse inner city school (Canterbury School).

Women's Lacrosse

  • 9/13/09: The team took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • 11/8/09: Members of the team volunteered at the Open House event for Wings & Hooves. Wings and Hooves Therapeutic Riding, Inc. aims to enhance the lives of individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental challenges by building confidence through equine-assisted activities and partnerships. The team split up and worked at cookie and hoof decorating booths, Toss the Poop and Pin the Tail on the Donkey stations and did face painting and bake sales.   • 4/24/10: The team wore special T-shirts during their Senior Day warm-ups to honor Stephanie Crispinelli, a sophomore at Lynn University who died in the earthquake in Haiti while on a humanitarian mission.  The Crusaders are also wearing the T-shirts to support 2007 HC graduate and former women's lacrosse player Jenna Constantino who was one of Stephanie's best friends.

They take students having trouble in school (they are all recent immigrants coming from an amazing number of countries around the world) out into our city to meet and interview fascinating people in an attempt to solve a local problem through our local government process. This semester, the topic is PLAY, and the problem the children are preparing to address is the length of recess at their schools, so came to HC to interview the athletes and watch them at practice. 
  • 3/21/10: The team hosted Downtown United, a team of NYC 8th and 9th-graders (coached by HC Alum Oscar Cantu) for a tour of Holy Cross and a college recruitment (education) step-by-step presentation. 
  • 4/28/10: Both coaches and members of the team held a workshop for the ‘Kids to College’ program.  They held drills and talked about what it takes to be a student athlete. 

Women's Soccer

  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

  • Spring ’10: The teams took part in the Annual DEAFinitley Swimming Program, providing one-on-one swimming lessons for deaf kids in the community.  

Men's and Women's Tennis

  • 4/13/10: Members of the men’s team held a clinic for the Nativity School.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

  • Nov. ’09 & March ‘10: Members of SAAC took part in the RESPECT program at the Worcester area high schools.
  • 10/24/09: Members of SAAC sold carnations at the football game to raise money for Wings & Hooves, a therapeutic riding program that aims to enhance the lives of individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental challenges by building confidence through equine-assisted activities and partnerships
  • Winter ’09-’10: The Committee held a Sporting Equipment Drive to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Worcester.
