2008-2009 Holy Cross Athletics Community Service Activities

At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams were involved in community service projects during the 2008-2009 school year.

Baseball

  • January 2009: The HC Coaches held a free coaching clinic for 75 Worcester Little League coaches.
  • The team initiated a relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • Members of the team and coaching staff held free mini clinics on Monday afternoons in the spring to benefit the Worcester Little League coaches.

Men's Basketball

  • November 2008 - Members of the team, along with Coaches Sanchez and Daiganault, attended and spoke at the five Worcester High School Athletic Wellness Meetings/Education Youth Workshops throughout the month.
  • January 10, 2009 - The team hosted a Post-Game Clinic.
  • January 24, 2009: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • March 28, 2009: Members of the team took part in the Annual Holy Cross Cares Day. They cleaned up a hiking trail at a national park in Worcester.  Photo Gallery
  • April 14, 2009: Alex Vander Baan and Mike Cavataio took part in Reading Day at the Pakachoag School.

Women's Basketball

  • September 28, 2008 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • October 31, 2008 - Coach Gibbons and members of the team went trick-or-treating at the Mercy Centre.
  • December 10, 2008 - Coach Gibbons and members of the team hosted a fundraising event for the Mercy Centre at Coral Seafood in Worcester.
  • January 13, 2009 - The team held their annual basketball game at the Mercy Centre. 
  • January 17, 2009: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • January 19, 2009: The team held a clinic at the Worcester Jewish Community Center for 90 children.
  • January 31, 2009: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Polaroid Event. Donations raised were given to the American Cancer Society.
  • February 7, 2009: The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Clinic.
  • February 21, 2009: The team hosted Pink Zone at the game to benefit breast cancer research.
  • March 28, 2009: Members of the team took part in the Annual Holy Cross Cares Day. They cleaned up a hiking trail at a national park in Worcester.  Photo Gallery
  • April 14, 2009: Coach Wilson took part in Reading Day at the Pakachoag School.
  • April 16, 2009: Coach Gibbons, Bethany O’Dell and Jessica Pearson took part in Reading Day at Venerini Academy.
  • April 18, 2009: Members of the team held an inner city clinic at Girls Inc.
  • May 2009: Members of the team ran a basketball tournament benefiting the Flutie Autism Association.

Cheerleading

  • October 11, 2008 - The squad helped run the annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic prior to the football game.
  • February 3, 2009: Chelsea Dwyer and Liz Parker took part in the Friendly’s Scoop Off to benefit Easter Seals.
  • Each of the squad members maintained relationships as a big sister in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program of Central Mass.

Men's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Women's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • September 27, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • September 28, 2008 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team took part in the Appalachia Project during spring break.

Field Hockey

  • September 27, 2008: The team participated in Miles for Smiles, a 2.25-mile uphill run around campus, raising $500 to benefit children born with cleft lips and palates in third world countries. Miles for Smiles is run by the Holy Cross student organization called Operation Smile.
  • April 20, 2009: Assistant Coach Susie Whalen ran in the Boston Marathon to raise awareness for AccessSportAmerica, a national non-profit organization that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities through high-challenge sports.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year. Kelly Casey, Erin Singleton and Jessie Cullen volunteered at the Worcester Animal Shelter. Courtney Callahan and Carolyn Connelly went on the Kenya Immersion trip in January. Breezy Rush participated in the Best Buddy program, Operation Smile and with S.H.A.P.E. Carolyn Connelly volunteered for the Sexual Assault Awareness Week, was an AIDS Project Worcester volunteer and a Peer Educator and also volunteered in the Benching for Breast Cancer event. Kristin Schulz collected can tabs for the Shriner's hospital.
  • The team initiated their relationship with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Football

  • October 11, 2008 - Members of the team hosted the annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic.

  • April 5-6, 2009: The HC Coaches held a coaching clinic for the Central Mass Coaching Association.
  • April 24, 2009: Members of the team took part in a bone marrow testing program.
  • Each Friday before a home game, members of the team visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets to help get the community more involved with HC Football.
  • Members of the team took part in the YMCA After School Program on Monday afternoons at 2 local middle schools.
  • Members of the team took part in the after school programs at the Nativity School and local YMCA a few days a week.
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

Men's Ice Hockey

  • September 28, 2008 The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • November 22, 2008 - The team hosted a Post-Game Autograph Session. 
  • February 24, 2009: The team held a clinic for the Central Mass Outlaws.
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • Members of the team took part in Crusaders for Kids, a Big Brother program set up by the players to bring inner city kids to other sporting events on campus as well as in the community.

Women's Ice Hockey

  • September 28, 2008 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • November 7, 2008 - Members of the team held a food drive at the local Price Chopper for the Worcester County Deputy Sheriff’s Association to help the less fortunate in the Worcester area.
  • November 2008 - The team held a coat drive for the Spanish-American Society in Leominster and the Claygon Community Center in Fitchburg.
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.

Men's Lacrosse

  • Summer 2008 - Team member Patrick Flynn spent time with Habitat For Humanity in Africa.
  • September 27, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • October 12, 2008: The Team took part in the 1st Annual Catamount Classic, a collegiate lacrosse tournament to support the fight against testicular cancer.
  • In memory of a former co-captain who passed away, every member of the team volunteered as John’s Brothers … mentors with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, matched with students at an ethnically diverse inner city school (Canterbury School).

Women's Lacrosse

  • September 28, 2008 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • March 6, 2009: The Team took part in the Aim for a Cause Tournament at UMBC, a collegiate lacrosse tournament to support the fight against breast cancer.

Men's Rowing

  • March 14, 2009: Members of the team helped reopen the East Side Trail System. They removed deadfall from the December ’08 storm that had rendered many portions of the trail system impassable.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Women's Rowing

  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Men's Soccer

  • November 2008 - Senior Captain Jerry Dickinson attended and spoke at the five Worcester High School Athletic Wellness Meetings throughout the month.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team volunteered during the spring at recess 2 days a week at City View School with the Sports In Society Program.

Women's Soccer

  • March 10 & 14, 2009 - Members of the team served two meals at the Mustard Seed, a volunteer soup kitchen that was started by two Holy Cross students in 1972.  Photo Gallery
  • March 28, 2009: The team took part in the Annual Holy Cross Cares Day. They spent the day at Abby’s House and helped with yard work.  Photo Gallery
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team collected old soccer gear to donate to the PassBack Program which sends soccer gear to underprivileged individuals and teams around the world.

Softball

  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team volunteered during the spring at recess 2 days a week at City View School with the Sports In Society Program.

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

  • Summer 2008: Members of the team took part in Swim Across America, raising money to donate to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
  • September 2008 - The swimming and diving teams hosted their annual Worcester County Swim League Competition.
  • March 28, 2009: The team took part in the Annual Holy Cross Cares Day. They spent the day at the Nativity School helping clean up the grounds.
  • Spring 2009: The team took part in the Annual DEAFinitley Swimming Program, providing one-on- one swimming lessons for deaf kids in the community.
  • Spring 2009: Members of the team raised $91 for the Relay for Disaster Relief. Stefan Opolski, Erin Meegan, Brian Livingston, Annie O'Shea, Monica Cullen, Pat McMahon, Mike Burns, Emily Greeke all ran in the race.
  • Members of the team took part in the Appalachia Project during spring break.

Men's and Women's Tennis

  • September 28, 2008 - Members of both teams took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • Members of both teams volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Volleyball

  • September 28, 2008: Members of the teams took part in the Annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team volunteered at Abby’s House.
  • Members of the team took part in the New Orleans project over spring break.
