2006-2007 Community Service Activities

At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams were involved in community service projects during the 2006-2007 school year.

Baseball

  • October 28, 2006 - The team took helped out in the Interactive EndZone at the Football game by monitoring the rides and applying HC tattoos to fans.
  • April 12, 2007 - Members of the team visited with the students at the Mary Finn Elementary School in Southboro. They spent the afternoon working on a class project together. 

Men's Basketball

  • November 25, 2006 - The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Autograph Session. 
  • April 11, 2007 - Alex Vanderbaan, Torey Thomas and Kyle Cruze took part in Reading Day at the Pakachoag School. 

Women's Basketball

  • September 10, 2006 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer. Monies raised from the Walk continued to support research at the newly built Cancer Research Center and helped advance treatments in finding a cure.
  • October 31, 2006 - Coach Gibbons and members of the team went trick-or-treating at the Mercy Centre. While there, the team donated a dozen NCAA basketballs that they received upon winning a NCAA Community Service Award! 
  • January 11, 2007 - The team and coaching staff held their annual clinic and basketball game at the Mercy Centre.
  • January 13, 2007 - The team hosted their Annual Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • January 27, 2007 - The team supported a game day promotion and took part in a Post-Game Clinic.
  • February 20, 2007 - The team supported a game day promotion and took part in a Post-Game Mini Ball Autographing Event. Donations raised were given to the American Cancer Society.
  • March 31, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Holy Cross' Cares Day.
  • April 11, 2007 - Kaitlin Foley, Laura Aloisi and Ashley McLaughlin took part in Reading Day at Julia Bancroft School.

Cheerleading

  • September 16, 2006 - The team took part in a Walk for Arthritis.
  • October 13, 2006 - The team hosted a clinic for the Millbury Pop Warner cheerleaders.
  • April 20, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Relay for Disaster Relief, an event set up to raise money to benefit Holy Cross' Katrina Relief Fund.
  • Members of the squad volunteer with Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) throughout the school year. This is a community service organization sponsored by the Chaplains' Office consisting of over 25 different outreach programs. Some of the cheerleaders programs include: tutoring at Plumley Village in Worcester, Aids Project Worcester, YWCA, South Shore Women's Center, RIP Shelter, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Appalacia Service Project, Habitat for Humanity Summer and the Mexico Immersion Program.

Men's and Women's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • September 10, 2006 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer. Monies raised from the Walk continued to support research at the newly built Cancer Research Center and helped advance treatments in finding a cure.
  • September 30, 2006 - The Women's Team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • April 22, 2007 - Members of the team took part in T-Gen Research Walk/Run for Cancer. This event was on behalf of Ann Whalen, a former athlete on the team that's struggling with adrenal cancer.
  • Members of the team took spent a few hours on Wednesday afternoons during the spring semester playing with the children at the Friendly House.
  • Members of the team volunteer with Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) throughout the school year. This is a community service organization sponsored by the Chaplains' Office consisting of over 25 different outreach programs.

Field Hockey

  • March 31, 2007 - The team took part in the Annual Holy Cross' Cares Day. They spent a few hours painting the halls of St. Agnes Day Care/pre-school at the Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester.
  • April 20, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Relay for Disaster Relief, an event set up to raise money to benefit Holy Cross' Katrina Relief Fund.
  • Members of the team volunteered with Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) throughout the school year. This is a community service organization sponsored by the Chaplains' Office consisting of over 25 different outreach programs.

Football

  • September 9, 2006 - Members of the team held the team's Annual Pre-Game Kids Clinic.
  • Each Friday before a home game, members of the team visited various schools doing Trivia For Tickets to help get the community more involved with Holy Cross Football.
  • Members of the team took part in the YMCA After School Program every Monday afternoon during the fall semester at 2 local middle schools.
  • Members of the team helped out with the After School Program at the Nativity school a few days a week during the Spring semester.
  • Members of the team took part in a Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program throughout the school year.

Men's Ice Hockey

  • September 10, 2006 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer. Monies raised from the Walk continued to support research at the newly built Cancer Research Center and helped advance treatments in finding a cure.
  • November 4, 2006 - The team hosted a Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • November 19, 2006 - Members of the team visited various schools doing Trivia For Tickets to help get the community more involved with Holy Cross Hockey.
  • January 15, 2007 - Cal St. Denis, Kai Magnussen and Chris Trovato took some kids from the Friendly House to dinner and a movie!
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • Members of the team took part in Crusaders for Kids, a Big Brother program set up by the players to bring inner city kids to other sporting events on campus as well as in the community.

Women's Ice Hockey

  • During the month of October, the team collected monetary donations as well as supplies for a Baby Drive for the Friendly House as people attended their games.
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • Members of the team spent some afternoons at the Boys and Girls Club during the spring semester.

Men's Lacrosse

  • September 9, 2006 - The team took helped out in the Interactive EndZone at the Football game by monitoring the rides and applying HC tattoos to fans.
  • September 30, 2006 - The team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • March 14, 2007 - The team hosted a picnic for their Little Brothers after their home game.
  • In memory of a former co-captain who passed away, every member of the Men's Lacrosse team volunteered as "John's Brothers" ... mentors with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Matched with students at an ethnically diverse inner city school, they spent two hours a week mentoring students both inside and outside the classroom throughout the school year.

Women's Lacrosse

  • March 31, 2007 - The team took part in the Annual Holy Cross' Cares Day.
  • April 20, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Relay for Disaster Relief, an event set up to raise money to benefit Holy Cross' Katrina Relief Fund.
  • A few members of the team spent an afternoon a week during the fall semester at the Heard Street Discovery Academy helping kids with homework.

Men's and Women's Rowing

  • April 20, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the annual Relay for Disaster Relief, an event set up to raise money to benefit Holy Cross' Katrina Relief Fund.
  • Members of the team volunteered with Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) throughout the school year. This is a community service organization sponsored by the Chaplains' Office consisting of over 25 different outreach programs.

Men's Soccer

  • October 14, 2006 - The team help a pre-game clinic for a local Youth Soccer team.

Women's Soccer

  • October 6, 2006 - The team help a pre-game clinic for a local Youth Soccer team.
  • October 7, 2006 - The team took helped out in the Interactive EndZone at the Football game by monitoring the rides and applying HC tattoos to fans.
  • March 31, 2007 - The team took part in the Annual Holy Cross' Cares Day.
  • April 20, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Relay for Disaster Relief, an event set up to raise money to benefit Holy Cross' Katrina Relief Fund.
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Mass. The team members each meet with their `little sister' weekly, throughout the whole school year.
  • Members of the team volunteered with Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) throughout the school year. Team members volunteered at the Dismas House, with the Jamaican Immersion Program, at St. Paul's Food Pantry and the Boys & Girls Club.

Softball

  • November 4, 2006 - The team took helped out in the Interactive EndZone at the Football game by monitoring the rides and applying HC tattoos to fans.
  • In December, Coach Maneggia and some team members held a multi-day clinic over Christmas Vacation week.
  • In March, the team hosted `Auburn Fastpitch Day' where a few softball teams from Auburn came to the HC game, had a small clinic, threw out first pitch and stood on the field for the National Anthem.
  • The team donated over $250 to the American Cancer Society from their sales of Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirts. They also donated 20 of these t-shirts to the UMass Mamography Center.

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

  • The swimming and diving teams hosted their annual Worcester County Swim League Competition in September. This giant swim meet consisted of multiple teams from Worcester County with participants ranging from age 8-18.
  • The Holy Cross team volunteers ran the meet from its promotional aspects to taking charge of running the bull-pen and snack bar. This year they held a 50/50 raffle and the proceeds were donated to the Katrina Fund.
  • The Swim Team once again participated in the American Sign Program in the Spring and host one-on-one swimming lessons for deaf children, siblings of deaf children and children of deaf adults in the community. The swim lessons are part of the Deaf Studies Program at Holy Cross.

Men's and Women's Tennis

  • September 10, 2006 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer. Monies raised from the Walk continued to support research at the newly built Cancer Research Center and helped advance treatments in finding a cure.
  • March 31, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the Annual Holy Cross' Cares Day.

Volleyball
