Fox made the Crusader varsity baseball club in 1895 while still a student in the prep school at Mount St. James. All told, he was the regular third baseman for the Crusaders for six seasons and captained the teams of 1897 and 1898. In his six seasons at Holy Cross, playing with such greats as Louis Sockalexis, the Crusaders posted a 106-38-2 record. Upon graduation, Fox received contract offers from all eight National League teams, but he turned them down and chose to enter the seminary and become a member of the priesthood.
