Stankard was the first Holy Cross football player to receive All America honors, as he was chosen by Walter Camp on the third All American team in 1903. As the team's captain, he played a major role in helping Holy Cross an 8-2 record that season, and a No. 4 ranking in the East. He played fullback on offense and end on defense. Stankard also earned three letters in baseball as a shortstop and led the team in batting in both 1903 and 1904. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates following graduation and reached the majors in 1904.
