Murphy was a three-year starter at forward for the Crusaders as he was the captain of the 1965-1966 squad which defeated nationally ranked St. John's and Manhattan. He made the Queen City Tournament All-Star team in 1965 as Holy Cross defeated Canisius in overtime.
He had his two biggest scoring outings later in his senior year. His career high was 28 points versus nationally ranked Providence and 26 more against nationally ranked Boston College. He reached double figures in 21 of Holy Cross' 23 games that season. Murphy finished his career with a 14.7 points-per-game average and 999 points.
