Ewald was a four-year starter in football at halfback and graduated as the Crusaders' career leading kickoff return man in several categories - returns in a season (26), returns in a career (71), and career return yards (1,381). He scored four touchdowns in a 41-40 HC win over UConn in 1976. His 76-yard pass reception to set up a score again Air Force was a key play in a huge upset by the Crusaders in 1978. He was co-captain of the 1979 squad with fellow Hall of Famer, Glen Verrette. Ewald also played outfield on the baseball team, and was part of the 1978 team which reached the NCAA tournament.
