O'Donnell was an undersized end who proved to be a huge factor in the Crusaders' unbeaten season (9-0-1) of 1935. That team held opponents to just 19 points and kept eight opponents from scoring at all. During that year, O'Donnell scored only touchdown in a Crusader win over Carnegie Tech, blocked two punts in the win over BC, threw the key block which allowed Bill Osmanski to run 70 yards for HC win over Dartmouth, and blocked a point after attempt that saved a tie against Manhattan which preserved the undefeated season. He received All American Honorable Mention and All American Jesuit College First Team honors as a senior.
