Biography

A four-year starter at center, McGovern anchored a Crusader offensive line that gained over 13,000 yards, operating chiefly from the wishbone offense.  He led the way for many outstanding Holy Cross running backs, including Peter Colombo and Larry Ewald.  He was also a versatile player, serving as a placekicker for coach Neil Wheelwright.  In his sophomore season, he helped Holy Cross start the season 5-0, including upset victories on the road at Army (31-0) and Air Force (35-18), coached by Bill Parcells.  He starred on the last two Holy Cross teams to defeat Boston College, in 1977 and 1978. 

He was the recipient of a number of personal honors, including All-New England (1979), All-ECAC (1978 and 1979) and was honored with the Davitt Award as the team's most outstanding offensive lineman following his senior season.  Not limiting his exploits to the gridiron, McGovern also participated in track and field, where he was a fierce competitor in the weight events.
