An accurate shooter, Witts graduated with the highest field goal percentage in Holy Cross history (.540). In addition to his scoring (1,397 career points), Witts also totaled 303 career assists, despite spending much of his career at forward. His teams made three post-season appearances (2 NIT, 1 NCAA) and he earned All-District honors as a senior. Co-captain of the 1980-1981 squad, Witts was a fifth-round selection by the Washington Bullets in 1981.  He was the first-ever winner of the Maloney Award, giving annually to the MVP of the men's basketball team at the Hall of Fame dinner each year sinc 1981.
