When former Crusader coach George Blaney spoke of consistently improving yourself as a player, he inevitably mentioned Dwight Pernell. Pernell was not only a proficient scorer, but he graduated as the school's all-time leader in career steals with 204, and third on the assist list with 430. Explosive at times, Pernell is the only Crusader other than Jack "The Shot" Foley to score 30 or more points in a half, scoring 30 in the second half against Mount St. Mary's in 1988, after having just six points at the break. During his senior season, the squad soared to a 24-6 record, the team's best finish in 36 years, including the North Section conference crown, and an NIT bid.
