Worcester, Mass. - Seniors Mary Beth Ryan (Holden, Mass.) and Michela Byrne (Portland, Ore.) have been named 2005 Presidential Service Award recipients, as announced today by the College's Student Affairs Department. Ryan and Byrne are among seven other Holy Cross students who earned Presidential recognition after being nominated by members of the faculty and staff for their service and contributions to the College and greater Worcester communities.
Ryan, an outfielder on the softball team, was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSida Academic All-District First Team with a 3.83 grade-point average. She was also selected as the 2004-05 Holy Cross Crusader of the Year and will serve as the Valedictorian for the Class of 2005.
A History major, Ryan has been named to the Dean's List every semester during her four years and has earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades three times. She has also served on the NCAA Reaccredidation Committee and the Student Advisory Council, while taking part in Holy Cross Cares Day and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Byrne was a four-year member of the school's track and field squad and specialized in distance running. This season, the Oregon native placed sixth in the 3,000 meter run (11:29.50) at the Tech Track Indoor Classic, hosted by MIT, where the Holy Cross women's team finished in first place. Byrne then went on to place seventh in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:46.83 at the Snowflake Classic, hosted by Northeastern University on March 26.
A Dean's list student, Byrne will graduate with a degree in English.
